The School of Liberal Arts of Xi’an Peihua University traces its origins back to 1984, when the major in Chinese Language and Literature was established—making it one of the university’s oldest majors. It is one of the oldest majors in the university. In 2003, it became one of the first majors to be upgraded to undergraduate status at the first private university in western China authorized to offer bachelor’s degrees, and also the earliest major among similar institutions in the northwest region to be granted the right to award bachelor’s degrees. Since then, it has achieved remarkable development results. In 2013, it was designated as the “Innovative Experimental Zone for Applied Talent Cultivation in Traditional Chinese Culture Education” in Shaanxi Province. In 2018, it was recognized as a six-star “First-Class Major” by Cuaa.net. In 2019, it was selected as a “First-Class Major” at the university level. In 2025, it was chosen as a demonstration major for the “Six Ones” project at the university level.
The faculty has steadily grown in size and strength, yielding rich achievements in teaching and research. In recent years, faculty members have undertaken and completed 3 national-level projects and over 20 provincial and ministerial-level projects, published 12 books and over 60 core journal papers, laying a solid foundation for the construction of the discipline. Guided by the concept of New Liberal Arts, the School focuses on the inheritance and innovation of traditional culture, integrates local cultural resources, and leverages AI technology to empower teaching. It is committed to cultivating interdisciplinary talents with a solid academic foundation, high professional competence, strong practical abilities, broad visions, and the ability to adapt to the needs of social development. In talent cultivation, the School adopts a multi-dimensional approach:
Integration of science and education: Driven by the dual core of “cultural inheritance + digital innovation”, courses such as Fundamentals of Digital Humanities and AI-enabled pilot courses (like Ancient Chinese and Poetry Appreciation) are offered. A digital humanities laboratory is established to cultivate students’ cultural inheritance and digital innovation capabilities, and to foster talents in fields such as digital humanities and prompt word engineers.
Integration of industry and education: With a strong focus on practical application, the School deepens collaborative talent cultivation by partnering with industry leaders such as Xi’an Chaoxing Technology Culture Co., LTD., Xi’an Bosheng Film and Television Media Co., Ltd. to co-establish training bases. It has established cooperative agreements with over 20 renowned basic education institutions, such as Xi’an Weiyang Jinyuan Primary School, to provide students with real-world practice opportunities. Industry professionals are regularly invited to teach in classrooms, and and jointly developed courses, such as Official Document Writing and Creative Writing, have been integrated into the curriculum through school-enterprise collaboration. This approach ensures precise alignment between talent development and workplace demands, effectively cultivating applied talents in fields such as creative writing and language services.
School-community cooperation: With the goal of serving the local area, the School collaborates with local institutions such as the Shaanxi Poetry Society, Chang’an Writers’ Association, and Hejiaying Drum and Music Society. Leveraging characteristic courses like Ancient Chinese Literature, it organizes a range of cultural activities that highlight local characteristics, while fostering students’ awareness of and capacity for community engagement.
Holistic development: A three-dimensional “second-classroom” education matrix integrating academic expansion, cultural inheritance, and skills competitions has been established. On average, over 40 cultural practice activities such as “Red Classic Recitation” are held each year to foster well-rounded student development. Students have achieved remarkable results, winning first and second prizes in the provincial “Challenge Cup” competition. The School has been awarded the title of “Top Ten Organizing Units of the National Language and Character Competition” for three consecutive years ( It will host the Shaanxi regional division in 2025). National-level innovation and entrepreneurship projects including Digital Database of Guanzhong Intangible Cultural Heritage Paper-cutting have been implemented. The postgraduate entrance examination admission rate has been increasing for three consecutive years. The “Academic Assistance + Psychological Counseling” program provides 100% support coverage for students in need. Many graduates have become key teachers in basic education or leading creators in the digital cultural and creative industries, with some joining well-known enterprises such as Chaoxing Technology.
In the future, the School will leverage the provincial “Innovation Experimental Zone for Cultural Digitalization Talent Cultivation” to deepen its digital humanities initiatives, and advance the transformation and upgrading of curricula, faculty development, and industry-university-research collaboration. The goal is to establish a provincially recognized first-class major and build a distinctive brand centered on the integration of “traditional cultural heritage + digital technology.”
