Recently, the 2023 Greater Bay Area International Maker Summit and Maker Faire Shenzhen wassuccessfully held at Vanke Yun Design Community in Nanshan District, Shenzhen. Our university’s Maker Center, representing higher education institutions, was invited to participate. The head of the Maker Center, Wang Xudong, and the guiding teacher of the Maker Center’s Open Creation Laboratory, Party Xionghu, along with representatives from the School’s Electronics Association, Software Association, and the national university student science and technology volunteer service demonstration team“Dandelion”Science Popularization Volunteer Service Team, including student representatives Xiao Jiayi, Bao Yicheng, Feng Junxiang, participated in the exhibition.

At this year’s summit, our university’s Maker Center showcased a custom video encoding and decoding solution based on FPGA developed for a niche market –“High-Performance Industrial Short-Wave Infrared Camera with Nationalized Video Compression and Decompression Technology”. Seizing the opportunity presented by the comprehensive nationalization demand for military and industrial products, the project demonstrated technological innovation through on-site product demonstrations, offering industry customers more choices. The booth also provided campus cultural andinnovativeproducts for labor skills courses and practical activities in primary, middle, and high schools, as well as supporting services for labor education courses in technological innovation. The exhibited products included PCB campus cultural and creative products, LED-illuminated Peihua school emblem, self-made patch USB flashlights, and on-site DIY projects. The showcase featured not only high-tech achievements but also engaging and easy-to-operate labor skill experience projects, attracting a diverse audience of different ages and making the booth exceptionally lively.

The university’s Maker Center serves as a municipal and provincial-level innovation and entrepreneurship space, featuring functional areas or incubation platforms such as the Open Creation Laboratory, Entrepreneurship Incubator, Technological Innovation Laboratory, Design Innovation Center, and the New Retail Business School. Equipped with industry-grade electronic engineering laboratories, SMT production equipment, and digital manufacturing facilities, the center follows a comprehensive innovation and entrepreneurship education system called“Course + Faculty + Platform + Competition + Practice”. This system covers the entire chain of services, including creative inspiration, validation, technical implementation, entrepreneurial guidance, entrepreneurial practice, and business incubation. It supports students in cross-disciplinary collaboration and cross-domain innovation, fostering a holistic approach to cultivating applied talents. The participation in this exhibition aims to connect with more partners and stakeholders. By showcasing the achievements of the laboratory in a“marketplace”setting, the university intends to provide both domestic and international makers with a firsthand experience of the charm of technology. Moreover, this initiative seeks to further advance the transformation of prototype products resulting from creative inventions, technological innovations, and design projects within the university’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Reportedly, the Greater Bay Area International Maker Summit has been held since 2012, evolving from its early stages of promoting the dissemination of science and technology culture and facilitating international scientific and technological exchanges to hosting events such as Shenzhen Maker Week and National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week. The summit aims to promote international exchange in innovation and entrepreneurship and facilitate the transformation of technological achievements. Over the years, it has attracted participation from over 2,000 individual makers, teams, and businesses from nearly 50 countries and regions worldwide. This year’s summit, comprised of forums, innovation exhibitions, maker workshops, and satellite activities, brought together more than 120 exhibitors from around the world. It drew professional attendees from nearly 30 countries globally and over 20 provinces domestically. The exhibition covered various industries such as artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, science and technology education, entertainment, smart cities, and smart agriculture, fostering the integration of technological innovation and industrial development. Participation from our university, as well as other academic institutions including Tsinghua University Shenzhen International Graduate School, Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen International Design School, Southern University of Science and Technology, Southwest Jiaotong University, Shenzhen Polytechnic, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Shenzhen Vocational and Technical University, and more than ten other universities, collectively showcased the practical applications of cutting-edge technological innovations in various industries.
